History of a parish church: San Giorgio di Argenta

Museo Civico

The parish church of San Giorgio is the oldest monument in the province of Ferrara; let's retrace its history through the finds preserved in the Civic Museum. The parish church dates back to 569 AD and was built at the behest of the archbishop of Ravenna, Sant'Agnello. The first houses in Argenta were built around this place of worship. Excavations carried out in the 1980s uncovered parts of the mosaic that decorated the original polychrome mosaic floor in the apsidal area, which is preserved in the museum.
